Succulent Garden

2016_1280_P7122401

Objective and Design

The Cactus and Succulent Garden covers 3500 square ft. of the Demo Garden. It has an interesting terrain in that it is comprised mostly of small hills with some flat area. This hilly feature will make the plants highly visible as well as provide good drainage. The sandy loam soil is also very helpful to the plants.

The garden is presently at least 50% planted. There is a large beautiful fruitless Olive tree which serves as a dominant feature and will provide good shade in the heat of Summer. Three Chilopsis linearis (Timeless Beauty) , Desert Willow will also provide filtered shade as they mature. Rock features have been added to provide shade and shelter.

Hopefully the 4 planted Golden Barrels, Echinocactus grusonii, will survive the winter frost. Additional Golden Barrels will be added to provide an eye catching area in the garden. Several beautiful Agaves and Yuccas are among the plantings and will hopefully survive this first winter unscathed by frost. A few Succulents are planted as a test to see how they fare this winter. We plan to add more Succulents and Cactus in early spring.

The plants are grouped by Genus.

Our goal is to demonstrate to the public what a well planned Xeriscape garden will look like . There will be signage to explain how Succulents differ from other plants in the vegetative world. We hope to show the physical differences between these plants depending on their country of origin.

What's New!

In the heat of summer, these anchor trees in the Succulent Garden stand up to all Mother Nature has to give. The maroon leafed Smoke Tree billows with pink smoky blossoms while the Desert Willows blooms profusely with its orchid-like flowers, both amongst the majestic agave.
