Master Gardeners offer free classes most Saturdays of the year. No advance registration is needed.

10/7 Permaculture for the Homestead and Garden - Instructor: Kit Veerkamp

Permaculture focuses on the relationships between ecological systems, landscape architecture and agriculture to minimize one's ecological impact by living in a manner to minimize waste, reduce or eliminate the dependency on fossil fuels or toxic chemicals by emulating surrounding ecosystems in form and function. We will present core design principles and common practices for the home gardener or homesteader to help create regenerative, resilient, energy-efficient, low-cost, low-impact and low-maintenance spaces around your home.

10/11 Olives: From Garden to Table - Combo MG & MFP Class - Instructor: Debbie Hillel

Curing olives is not complicated!  In the class, you will learn different techniques to curing.  Our volunteers will put on live demonstrations that you can watch and ask your questions.

10/14 Saturdays with Barry - Instructor: Barry Wold

A lot of things are happening in the fall vegetable garden.  Barry will explain various planting, thinning, and pest control methods as well as needs for the success of your vegetable garden during each month’s demonstration.

10/14 Replacing Your Lawn - Instructor: Heidi Napier

Mow no more!  Learn how to get rid of your water-guzzling lawn and replace it with something just as beautiful, but less thirsty.  We will cover how to kill the grass, how to improve the soil for other plants, how to install easy irrigation, and we'll give you ideas for native plants and others that don't require lots of water.

10/21 Starthistle - Instructor: Steve Savage

Join Master Gardener Steve Savage to learn about this invasive weed that has taken over large portions of California’s range land and urban landscape.  Learn about its origins, how it moves, why it is so difficult to control, how to overcome these difficulties, and how to design an effective control program.

Join the UCCE Master Gardeners of El Dorado County to learn about orchard development and tree care with three leading experts.

11/4 Making Worms Work for You - Instructors: Merry Campbell, Gail Fulbeck & Cindy Young

Join Master Gardeners Merry Campbell, Gail Fulbeck, and Cindy Young for this presentation on how to use these hardworking friends of all gardeners, the worms.  Learn how worms can rapidly break down kitchen waste to make worm compost, one of the best organic fertilizers possible.  Covered also will be the types of worms needed, how to harvest the compost and how to set up a worm bin.

11/8 The Art of Growing Succulents - Instructors: Sheri Burke, Bobbie Handen & Debbie Hillel 

The Art of Growing Succulents can be yours. Join Bobbie Handen, Debbie Hillel and Joanne Geggatt to find out everything you have ever wanted to know about growing succulents. Enter the exciting World of Succulents by means of Power Point presentations, interactive participation and hands on activities.

Succulents are water saving plants at their best. Learn how to properly water, grow, propagate and feed succulents. Strategies to prevent your succulents from freezing will be offered. The class will offer hands on succulent propagation demonstrations. Cuttings will be available to take home.

Join Master Gardener and retired meteorologist Steve Savage to learn about gardening in our unique environment.  Explore plant hardiness zones; effects of light, heat, and terrain on plants; micro-climates; frost formation and protection; and how to make short range forecasts for your garden.
